The Fly Fishing Film Tour is a great event.
Hours of the latest fly fishing films, great sponsors, great comrades, and beer! The tour travels to cities all across the USA and Canada. This years films were a mix of super great fly fishing action from around the world, conservation activities from the US, to Cuba, to Mongolia (they love their fly fishing in Mongolia), and humor.
For the last several years, I have been attending the Fly Fishing Film Tour in Tampa, FL and really enjoyed it.
I figured the Film Tour in Portland, one of the central Fly Fishing places in the US, must be a blast!
Sure enough, the show draws so many people the venue was 4 times as large as in Tampa and they had to have two show times! And yes, the local beer was MUCH better.
Being new to Portland I didn't expect to know anyone there. Wrong, Peter was there, from the Villages. Smart guy, I should have figured he was a fly fishermen - LOL. Here a couple months and making friends. Rose already has billions of friends, but she is nicer that I am.
The show pulls really good sponsors from the fly fishing industry. This years big give away is an all paid one week fly fishing trip to Mongolia. I'm sleeping with my phone until they call me. I would love to go. I was talking to the Costa Del Mar rep about the trip and she asked, "Wouldn't you like to go to Mongolia"? OK, give her some slack she doesn't know me. So I told her, yep been there, and she about fell down. Actually, as I explained, I have not been to Mongolia, but on its northern boarder when working in Russia, and on its southern border, when working in China. She sort of glazed over at that point. But I'm ready to go, rods in their travel tubes and fishing bag packed. Call me, please! Oh and later, another sponsor was talking about Thailand and said, "Wow, I'll bet you would like to go there'. By now you already know the answer to that one...
There is a drawing for tons of other sponsor give a ways (rods, swag, etc..) and for some reason, almost all it went to the kids and ladies in attendance. Everyone got a big kick out of these 10 year old's trying to carry their new gotten gains back to their seats. On one drawing two guys with the same name ran up to claim their prizes. One was 6 ft tall and the other was 3 ft tall. Everyone got a laugh out of it and the older guy polity bowed out.
Starting later this month, I'll be out fly fishing... New fish, new freaking cold water, new fun.
Aladdin Theater
Portland may only be 2nd to NY in the number of theaters around. There are probably 30 shows a night, huge music seen. Most of the theaters are really old and cool places. Rose and I have been to the bar at the Bagdad Theater but the Film Show was the first time I have been in one of these old theaters. Really take you back. Soooo, much better than a new superplex.. You remember, the old theaters that show movies, but have a stage, too.
PS: I had originally written a negative comment here about one of the videos in the film tour that I thought was not appropriate to the show. I decided to take the comment out.
